Why Professional Photography Matters for Your Airbnb or Vacation Rental

Professional Vacation Rental Photography in Duluth, Superior, Two Harbors & Beyond

When you're searching for a vacation rental, what's one of the first things you look at? The photos, of course!

Whether someone is searching for a cozy cabin along Lake Superior, a charming Airbnb in Duluth, or a spacious vacation home for a family getaway, the photos are often what catch their attention first.

As a professional real estate and vacation rental photographer based in Duluth, Minnesota, I've photographed everything from cozy cottages to beautiful lakefront retreats throughout northern Minnesota and Wisconsin.

One thing I love about vacation rental photography is that it's about more than showcasing a property. It's about capturing the experience of staying there!

If you're an Airbnb or Vrbo owner wondering whether professional photography is worth the investment, here's why it can make such a difference.

1. First Impressions Matter

Think about the last time you searched for a vacation rental. Chances are, you scrolled through quite a few properties before deciding which ones were worth a closer look.

Your potential guests are doing the exact same thing!

Professional photography helps your property make a strong first impression and stand out among other listings on Airbnb and Vrbo.

Dark, blurry, or poorly composed photos can make even a beautiful property less appealing. On the other hand, bright, thoughtfully composed images help showcase your rental's best features.

My photography style is bright, colorful, and timeless. I focus on creating images that make your property look its best while still accurately representing what guests can expect.

2. Cell Phone Photos vs. Professional Photography: What's the Difference?

Cell phone cameras have come a long way, but there's a world of difference between taking a quick photo on your phone and hiring an experienced professional photographer!

Photography is my full-time career, and I've photographed over 1,000 properties. Over the years, I've developed the experience, technical skills, and eye for detail needed to showcase a space at its very best.

There's a lot that goes into professional photography beyond simply taking the picture. Here's what I bring to every session:

  • Professional equipment: High-quality cameras and specialized lenses allow me to capture everything from wide-angle room photographs to beautiful close-up detail shots.

  • Professional lighting: I don't rely solely on natural light. I bring professional lighting equipment to my sessions to help create bright, balanced images, even in rooms with challenging lighting conditions.

  • Composition and attention to detail: I know which angles best showcase a room, how to create a cohesive gallery, and what little distractions to look for before taking a photo.

  • Professional editing: Every image is carefully edited for consistent colors, brightness, and a polished, natural appearance.

  • Drone photography: Aerial images can showcase waterfront locations, wooded surroundings, and outdoor amenities that simply can't be captured from the ground.

Did you know? Drone photography used to market an Airbnb or vacation rental is considered non-recreational use by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). These flights generally fall under Part 107 regulations, meaning the drone must be operated by an FAA-certified remote pilot.

I'm an FAA Part 107-certified, insured, and State of Minnesota-registered drone pilot, so you're hiring someone who understands both aerial photography and the regulations involved.

But beyond the equipment and technical knowledge, I believe one of the biggest differences is experience.

I have a trained eye for noticing the things that make a photograph work, from the placement of furniture and pillows to the way natural light falls across a room.

My goal isn't just to take pictures of your vacation rental. It's to create a professional collection of images that truly does justice to the space you've worked so hard to create.

3. You're Selling an Experience, Not Just a Place to Sleep

This is one of the biggest differences between traditional real estate photography and vacation rental photography.

When photographing a home for sale, my focus is primarily on showcasing the property's layout, rooms, and features to potential buyers.

With vacation rentals, we're also showing guests what it might feel like to stay there.

Think about a couple planning a romantic weekend along Lake Superior. They're imagining coffee on the deck, relaxing by the fireplace, and enjoying a beautiful view.

Or a family searching for a getaway where everyone can gather around the dining table, play games, and spend time together.

I want my photographs to help potential guests picture those experiences before they even arrive!

4. It's All in the Details!

One of my favorite things about photographing vacation rentals is capturing all the little details that make each property unique!

When you hire me for traditional real estate listing photography, my focus is on the overall rooms, layout, and features of the home.

But with vacation rental photography, I also capture detail shots that I typically wouldn't take during a traditional real estate session.

I love highlighting the special touches that make your rental special, including:

  • Beautiful decor and unique furniture

  • Cozy blankets, pillows, and linens

  • Coffee bars and stocked kitchens

  • Board games, books, and entertainment

  • Complimentary toiletries and bathroom amenities

  • Artwork and decorative accents

As a vacation rental owner, you've likely spent a lot of time choosing these details, and I want to make sure they get the attention they deserve!

These close-up images help tell the story of your property and showcase the extra care you've put into creating a welcoming space.

5. Highlight the Amenities That Make Your Property Unique

Every vacation rental has something that makes it special, and those features deserve to be showcased!

Maybe your property has a private sauna, a hot tub, a cozy fireplace, or a beautiful lake view. Perhaps there's a spacious outdoor deck, a firepit, or a fenced backyard that's perfect for guests traveling with dogs.

I love learning what makes each property unique so I can make sure those features are highlighted in the final gallery.

Professional photography showcases both the larger amenities and the little details that help your rental stand out.

6. Showcase Your Property From Every Angle

Beautiful photos are important, but guests also want to understand the property they're booking.

Is the living room spacious enough for everyone? What does the kitchen look like? How are the gathering spaces arranged?

Professional wide-angle photography helps showcase the layout and flow of your rental while accurately representing each room.

And sometimes, the best features are outside!

As an FAA Part 107-certified drone pilot, I also offer aerial photography to highlight waterfront locations, wooded properties, outdoor amenities, and scenic surroundings.

Drone photography can be especially valuable for vacation rentals throughout Duluth, Two Harbors, and the North Shore, where the natural surroundings are often a huge part of the experience.

7. Professional Photography Is an Investment in Your Rental

Owning a vacation rental takes a lot of work!

Between furnishing, decorating, maintaining the property, and creating a great guest experience, you've likely invested a significant amount of time and money into your space.

Professional photography helps showcase that investment.

A beautiful, cohesive photo gallery can help your listing stand out, build trust with potential guests, and give them a clear idea of what to expect.

Your images can also be valuable for marketing beyond Airbnb and Vrbo, including your rental's website, social media, welcome guide, and other promotional materials.

Ready to Showcase Your Airbnb or Vacation Rental?

Whether you're launching a brand-new Airbnb or refreshing the photos on an existing listing, I'd love to help!

I'm based in Duluth, Minnesota, and offer professional vacation rental photography throughout northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, including Superior, Two Harbors, and the surrounding Northland.

From cozy cabins and charming cottages to beautiful lakefront retreats, I love helping property owners showcase both their space and the experience they've created for guests.

I also photograph mid-term rentals, including furnished properties listed on platforms like Furnished Finder, as well as apartments, long-term rental properties, and vacant homes available for rent. Whether your property is furnished or completely empty, professional photography can help showcase it to potential renters.

Where to Get Professional Headshots in Duluth, MN

Looking for professional headshots in Duluth, Minnesota? Here's what to know about studio headshots, corporate photography, and finding the right session for you!

Let's talk about headshots!

Whether you're updating your LinkedIn profile, starting a new job, launching a business, or finally replacing that headshot from 10 years ago (you know who you are!), having a professional photo of yourself is something worth investing in.

Your headshot is often one of the first impressions people have of you, especially in today's digital world. It might appear on your company's website, your LinkedIn profile, business cards, marketing materials, or even your email signature.

And while having a professional photo is important, I also believe the experience of having it taken should be enjoyable!

I'm Tatiana, the photographer behind Tatiana Marie Photography in Duluth, Minnesota. I offer professional headshot photography in my studio, conveniently located just four minutes from the Miller Hill Mall, as well as on-location headshot sessions for businesses throughout the surrounding area.

Whether you need one updated photo or professional headshots for your entire team, I'm here to make the process as simple and comfortable as possible!

Professional studio headshot photography in Duluth, Minnesota by Tatiana Marie Photography.

Professional Headshots Without the Stress

Let's address something right away: I know most people don't exactly jump for joy at the thought of having their picture taken.

In fact, one of the things I hear most often from clients is, "I hate having my photo taken!"

Trust me, you're not alone!

The good news is that you don't need to know how to pose, figure out your best angle, or practice your smile in the mirror before coming in.

That's my job!

During your session, I'll guide you through flattering poses and pay attention to all those little details that make a difference.

I'm talking about adjusting your hair, straightening your clothing, checking jewelry, and making sure everything looks polished before we take the photo.

My goal is for you to walk away with images that look professional, feel natural, and most importantly, still look like YOU.

Studio Headshot Mini Sessions in Duluth, MN

If you're looking for a quick, simple way to update your professional photo, my studio headshot mini sessions might be exactly what you need!

My photography studio is located in Duluth, just four minutes from the Miller Hill Mall, making it a convenient option for professionals throughout Duluth, Superior, Hermantown, and the surrounding communities.

These sessions are designed to be straightforward and efficient. You don't need to set aside an entire afternoon to get a great professional headshot!

For my studio headshot mini sessions, I use a clean, classic white backdrop. I love the timeless look it creates, and it works beautifully for a wide variety of professions and industries. A simple white background keeps the focus exactly where it should be: on you!

Studio headshot mini sessions are especially popular with:

  • Realtors and other real estate professionals

  • Business owners and entrepreneurs

  • Job seekers and professionals updating LinkedIn

  • Attorneys, accountants, and financial professionals

  • Healthcare professionals

  • College students and recent graduates

  • Anyone who needs an updated professional photo!

My studio is best suited for individual headshots or small groups of approximately one to three people.

Whether it's your very first professional headshot or you're simply ready for a refresh, I'll help you feel comfortable in front of the camera.

My 15-minute studio headshot mini sessions are perfect for anyone looking for a quick, professional refresh without a big time commitment. You'll receive your professionally edited images in approximately one week.

Want to learn more? You can find session details, pricing, and frequently asked questions in my Headshot Mini Session Pricing Guide.

Corporate Headshots: I'll Come to Your Business!

What if you need professional headshots for an entire office or team?

Good news! You don't have to coordinate sending everyone to my studio.

I also offer on-location corporate headshot photography throughout Duluth and the surrounding area.

I bring my professional photography equipment directly to your office or preferred location, allowing employees to have their photos taken without having to leave the workplace.

This is a great option for businesses that want a consistent, polished look across their website, employee directories, and marketing materials.

Professional team headshots are especially valuable when:

  • Your company has recently hired new employees.

  • You're updating or redesigning your website.

  • Your existing employee photos are outdated or inconsistent.

  • Your business is going through a rebrand.

  • You want a cohesive, professional look for your entire team.

One of the biggest advantages of scheduling corporate headshots together is consistency. Instead of having employee photos taken by different photographers, in different locations, with completely different lighting and backgrounds, everyone can have a professional image that feels like part of the same brand.

And don't worry, I know your employees have actual work to do! My goal is to keep the photography process organized, efficient, and as minimally disruptive to your workday as possible.

Whether you need headshots for two employees or an entire company, I'd be happy to help coordinate a session that works for your team.

You can learn more about group sessions in my Group Headshot Pricing & FAQ Guide.

Looking for Something Beyond a Traditional Headshot?

Sometimes, a traditional headshot is exactly what you need. Other times, you might want photos that tell a little more of your story. That's where branding photography comes in!

Branding sessions are perfect for business owners, entrepreneurs, Realtors, creatives, and professionals who want a variety of images for their websites, social media, and marketing materials.

Unlike my studio headshot sessions, branding sessions take place on location! This could be your office, storefront, workspace, or another location that fits your brand. Not sure where to go? I'm happy to help brainstorm ideas and find a location that works for you!

I typically recommend my two-hour session for branding photography. This gives us plenty of time for different outfits, setups, and a great variety of images. However, depending on what you're looking for, I can absolutely make a one-hour session work too!

Think of it this way: a headshot introduces you, while branding photography helps tell your story!

You can explore session options, pricing, and frequently asked questions in my Headshot & Branding Photography Pricing Guide.

What Should You Wear for Professional Headshots?

This is easily one of the most common questions I get!

My biggest piece of advice is to wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident while still reflecting your profession and personality.

For most professional headshots, I recommend choosing clothing that fits well, complements your skin tone, and doesn't distract from your face.

Solid colors are usually a great option, and simple, timeless pieces tend to photograph beautifully.

That doesn't mean everyone needs to show up wearing a black blazer!

If you work in a more creative or casual industry, your clothing can absolutely reflect that. The goal is to look like a polished version of yourself, not someone completely different.

And if you wear glasses every day, feel free to wear them for your headshots! They're part of how people recognize you.

Ultimately, I want your headshot to feel authentic to who you are and how you want to present yourself professionally.

How Often Should You Update Your Professional Headshot?

There's no one-size-fits-all answer, but I generally recommend updating your professional headshot whenever your appearance or professional role changes significantly.

Maybe you've changed your hairstyle, started a new career, launched a business, or simply realized your current photo doesn't look much like you anymore.

If someone meets you in person after seeing your headshot online, they should be able to recognize you!

And if your current professional photo is a cropped picture from a wedding five years ago, this might be your sign that it's time for an update. No judgment, I promise!

A current, professional headshot is a simple way to help your online presence feel polished and approachable.

What Makes a Great Professional Headshot?

In my opinion, a great headshot isn't just about having perfect lighting or a flattering camera angle.

Of course, those things matter, and I take them seriously!

But what really makes a headshot stand out is when the person in the photo looks comfortable, confident, and approachable.

I want your images to feel like you on your best day.

That's why I take a detail-oriented approach to every session. From adjusting your posture and clothing to helping you find a natural expression, I want to make sure the little things are taken care of.

You shouldn't have to worry about whether your hair is out of place or your necklace is crooked.

That's what I'm there for!

When Will I Receive My Headshots?

I know that once you've had your photos taken, you're probably excited to start using them!

For my 15-minute individual studio headshot mini sessions, your finished images will be delivered within one week!

For sessions longer than 15 minutes, branding sessions, and group headshots, you can expect to receive your finished images within three weeks.

I take the time to carefully review and edit your photos so they're polished, professional, and ready to use for your LinkedIn profile, business website, marketing materials, and more.

My goal is to make the entire experience straightforward, from booking your session to receiving your finished images.

Ready to Update Your Professional Headshot?

Whether you need a fresh LinkedIn photo, professional images for your company's website, or updated headshots for your entire team, I'd love to work with you!

At Tatiana Marie Photography, I offer individual headshot mini sessions at my Duluth studio, on-location corporate headshots for businesses, and customized branding photography sessions.

My goal is to make the process easy, comfortable, and enjoyable while creating professional images you'll feel confident sharing.

If you've been putting off updating your headshot, consider this your friendly reminder that it might be time!

How to Prepare Your Home for Professional Real Estate Photography

Simple tips from a Duluth, MN real estate photographer to help your home look its best in listing photos.

Bright and inviting living room professionally photographed for a real estate listing in Duluth, Minnesota.

Getting ready to sell your home? First of all, how exciting! Whether you're moving into your dream home, relocating, or starting a new chapter, there's a lot that goes into getting a house ready to hit the market.

One of the most important steps is making sure your home is ready for professional real estate photography!

I'm Tatiana, the photographer behind Tatiana Marie Photography in Duluth, Minnesota. I've photographed over 1,000 homes throughout the Northland, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that a little preparation can make a BIG difference in how a home photographs.

The good news? Sometimes, the smallest changes can make the biggest impact!

While these are some of my favorite tips for getting a home photo-ready, I also see tremendous value in professional home staging. I've photographed many beautifully staged properties over the years, and a talented stager can make such a difference in how a space looks and feels. If you're considering professional staging and aren't sure where to start, I'd be more than happy to share recommendations for local home stagers!

Whether you're working with a professional stager or preparing your home yourself, here are some of my favorite tips to help your property look its absolute best in photos.

First Things First: Less Is More!

If I could give homeowners just one piece of advice before their photography session, it would be this: declutter, declutter, declutter!

I know, probably not the most exciting advice you've ever received, but hear me out!

When potential buyers scroll through real estate listings, you want them to notice the beautiful kitchen, spacious living room, and natural light pouring through the windows. You don't want their attention going straight to the stack of mail on the counter or the collection of shampoo bottles in the shower.

A good rule of thumb is that if something isn't furniture or decor, it probably doesn't need to be in the photo.

I also recommend temporarily putting away personal family portraits, religious items, and political memorabilia before your photography session. While these items may be meaningful to you, removing them helps create a welcoming, neutral space where potential buyers can envision themselves living in the home.

Of course, every home is different, and you don't need to pack up your entire life before your photography appointment. The goal is simply to create clean, inviting spaces that allow buyers to focus on the home itself.

Let's Talk About the Kitchen

Kitchens are one of my favorite spaces to photograph! As a foodie, I love showcasing everything they have to offer, from the cooking space and appliances to the unique features that make each kitchen special!

Kitchens are also one of the spaces buyers pay close attention to, so this is an area where a little extra preparation goes a long way.

Before your session, I recommend:

  • Clearing countertops of unnecessary items like paper towels, mail, dish racks, and small appliances.

  • Removing magnets, photographs, and notes from the refrigerator.

  • Tucking away dish soap, sponges, and cleaning supplies.

  • Hiding garbage cans and pet food bowls.

  • Keeping decor simple and intentional.

You don't necessarily need completely empty countertops. A nice plant, decorative bowl, or a few thoughtfully placed accessories can look beautiful!

And of course, we can't forget the classic bowl of lemons! If you've spent any time around real estate photography or home staging, you know exactly what I'm talking about. It's practically a staging staple at this point, but there's a reason for it! That little pop of color really does look beautiful in a kitchen.

At the end of the day, I want buyers to notice the beautiful cabinetry, the spacious countertops, the appliances, and all the little details that make your kitchen unique, not everything that happens to live on the countertops!

Living Rooms and Bedrooms: Keep It Simple

Living rooms and bedrooms should feel comfortable, welcoming, and spacious.

In living areas, try to tuck away remote controls, visible charging cords, toys, tissue boxes, and other everyday items. Straighten pillows, fold blankets neatly, and remove anything that makes the room feel crowded.

For bedrooms, make the beds, straighten the bedding, and clear off nightstands. A lamp and a small decorative item are perfectly fine, but piles of books, charging cables, and everyday clutter can be distracting in photos.

And here's a little insider tip: closets are usually a great temporary hiding spot!

Unless you have a large walk-in closet that's a selling feature, I typically won't be photographing the inside of your closets. So if you need somewhere to tuck away a laundry basket or a few extra items, that's often a great option.

Bathrooms: The Little Details Matter

Bathrooms are one of the easiest spaces to prepare, but they're also one of the places where I see the most things that could have been tucked away.

Before your photography appointment, I recommend clearing off bathroom countertops, putting away personal toiletries, and removing bath mats.

If you have a beautiful tiled shower or glass shower enclosure, you'll definitely want to show it off! Removing shampoo bottles, razors, loofahs, and other personal items helps keep the focus on those features.

A few other things to remember:

  • Close all toilet lids.

  • Hide garbage cans and toilet brushes.

  • Put away extra toiletries and tissue boxes.

  • Remove litter boxes and pet items.

  • Straighten any decorative towels.

These might seem like tiny details, but they really do make a difference in the finished photos.

Don't Forget About the Exterior!

The outside of your home is just as important as the inside. In fact, an exterior photo is often one of the first images buyers see when browsing listings.

Before your photography session, take a few minutes to walk around the outside of your home.

Move vehicles out of the driveway and away from the front of the house. Tuck garbage and recycling bins into the garage or somewhere out of sight. Roll up garden hoses, put away lawn equipment, and straighten patio furniture.

If the season allows, mowing the lawn, tidying landscaping, and sweeping walkways can also make a big difference.

Here in Duluth and the surrounding Northland, we experience just about every type of weather imaginable. From snowy winter listings to beautiful summer lake properties, every season brings its own considerations.

No matter the season, taking a little extra time to tidy up the exterior can make a big difference in how your property looks in photos!

And if you've booked drone photography, removing vehicles and other large movable items can be especially helpful since aerial photos capture a much wider view of the property.

Lighting: Let Your Home Shine!

One of the things I love most about real estate photography is showcasing a home's natural light.

Before your appointment, open blinds and curtains to let in as much natural light as possible. I also recommend walking through your home and checking that all light bulbs are working properly. If you notice any burned-out bulbs, be sure to replace them before your photography session. It's a small detail, but it can make a noticeable difference in how a room photographs!

Please turn on all ceiling lights, but leave lamps and ceiling fans off.

Don't worry if your home doesn't have huge windows or an abundance of natural light. Professional photography equipment and editing help me photograph a wide variety of spaces.

Your job is simply to have the home ready. I'll take care of the photography!

What About Pets?

I love animals, but pet supplies can create a little extra visual clutter in listing photos.

Before your appointment, try to tuck away pet beds, toys, food bowls, water dishes, and litter boxes.

It's also helpful to have a plan for keeping pets safely out of the rooms being photographed.

And don't worry, you don't need to remove every trace of your furry family members. Just a little tidying goes a long way!

One Important Thing to Know Before Your Session

I always want my photography appointments to go as smoothly as possible for everyone involved.

That's why I ask that all cleaning, decluttering, and moving of items be completed before I arrive.

As your photographer, my job is to capture your home professionally, rather than clean, stage, or move personal belongings during the appointment.

Having everything ready ahead of time allows me to focus on what you hired me to do: creating beautiful, professional images of your property.

If you're feeling overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done before listing your home, my advice is to start with the things that will make the biggest visual impact. Clear the countertops, put away clutter, make the beds, and tidy up the exterior.

You might be surprised by how much of a difference those simple steps make!

I've Made It Easy With a Home Photography Preparation Guide!

I know preparing a home for listing photos can feel like a lot, especially when you're already juggling everything else that comes with selling a house.

That's exactly why I created my own Preparing Your Home for Photos guide!

It's a simple, room-by-room checklist covering everything from the kitchen and bathrooms to bedrooms, living spaces, and the exterior.

When you book a real estate photography session with Tatiana Marie Photography, your booking confirmation email will include a link to this guide. That way, you'll have everything you need to prepare your home ahead of time, and you can check things off as you go!

The checklist isn't meant to add stress or make you feel like your home needs to be absolutely perfect. It's simply a helpful resource to make the process easier and help us get the best photos possible.

Ready for Your Home's Close-Up?

Selling a home comes with a lot of moving parts, but preparing for professional photography doesn't have to be complicated.

A little time spent tidying and preparing can make a noticeable difference in how your home is presented online.

At Tatiana Marie Photography, I specialize in professional real estate photography throughout Duluth, Superior, Two Harbors, and the surrounding Northland communities. I also offer drone photography, floor plans, and virtual staging to help showcase properties and their unique features.

Whether you're a Realtor preparing your next listing or a homeowner getting ready to sell, I'd love to help make your property look its best!
